Garden of the Goddess

I created this piece in 2018 with a vision of comfort and safety for all women. The face of this piece is a close friend, Effie Mbrow. I was inspired by her decision to shave her head and the confidence of not allowing hair to define a person, their femininity, or who they are. Hair and women have had a rough relationship throughout history with the media setting standards of what hair on heads and bodies is accepted. With educational facilities denying women education based on their hairstyle. Whether it’s hair, or not, braids or curly, buzzed or straight, dreads or afro, every woman has this beautiful aspect to themselves and for themselves and it should not be classified. As beautiful as flowers. I honor the hair of black women by forming the flowers into an afro. All is a beautiful garden that extends from a goddess. Nurtured and loved and not hidden. People should feel beautiful without their hair / with any kind of hair / without the hair considered by impossible standards that little girls consume online and on TV.
